Traditional break-bulk shipping of granular products in 25kg bags inside containers achieves only 18-22 tonnes net payload per 40ft container, compared to 26-28 tonnes achievable with container liner systems — a 25-35% payload loss. For a commodity product valued at $300/tonne FOB, each container shipped in bags rather than bulk sacrifices $1,800-2,400 in freight efficiency. Over 100 container shipments annually, this represents $180,000-240,000 in lost shipping value.
Beyond payload loss, bagged transport incurs additional costs: bagging labor ($3-5 per tonne), 25kg bag cost ($8-15 per tonne of product), palletization ($4-6 per tonne), and destination devanning labor ($5-8 per tonne). Total bagging-related costs range from $20-34 per tonne — for a 20,000 tonne annual export program, this represents $400,000-680,000 in avoidable packaging and handling costs that a container liner system eliminates entirely.
A 40ft HC container has internal dimensions of approximately 12.03m * 2.35m * 2.69m (L*W*H), giving a total internal volume of 76.3 m³. When filled with 25kg bags on pallets, the effective utilization is only 55-65% of this volume due to: (1) inter-bag air gaps (8-12% volume loss), (2) pallet dead space (10-15% volume loss), (3) top clearance for forklift loading (5-8% volume loss), and (4) irregular bag shapes creating voids against container walls (3-5% volume loss).
The weight limitation compounds the volume inefficiency: a standard 40ft container has a maximum gross weight of 30,480kg (67,200 lbs). Subtracting the container tare (3,800kg), pallet weight (600kg for 20 pallets), and 25kg bag tare (1,008kg for 1,008 bags), the maximum net product weight is 25,072kg — just 82% of the container's weight capacity. In contrast, a container liner system with 50kg liner tare and no pallets allows a net payload of 26,630kg — recovering 1,558kg of lost payload per container.
Our CLB-40HC-DB liner system converts a standard 40ft container into a bulk transport vessel. The liner is constructed from PE-coated woven PP fabric (200 g/m², coating thickness 25μm) that provides both structural strength (fabric tensile 1800 N/5cm warp) and moisture barrier (WVTR <2.0 g/m²/24h). The liner is installed through the container's rear doors, secured with 4 tubular steel bulkhead bars that transfer the bulk material's horizontal pressure to the container's corner posts.
The loading system utilizes the container's existing top hatches (if equipped) or a rear-door loading chute with a 60cm * 60cm feed opening compatible with standard grain augers and pneumatic conveyors. Loading rate is 30-60 tonnes per hour depending on conveyor capacity. The discharge system uses a rear chute with a heavy-duty drawstring closure (8mm polyester cord, 200kg breaking strength) that allows controlled flow regulation during unloading.
Pressure distribution analysis: the bulkhead bars are designed for a maximum horizontal pressure of 15 kPa at the container floor level (based on Janssen's equation for wheat at 25 tonnes fill). Each bar's bending moment capacity of 4.2 kN·m (48.3mm OD * 3.2mm wall steel tube, S235 grade) provides a safety factor of 2.5* against the maximum calculated bending moment of 1.7 kN·m.
Soybeans, corn, wheat, and barley shipments from processing plants to export terminals. Container liners enable direct farm-to-container loading without intermediate bagging, reducing handling costs by $18-25/tonne. Food-grade liner certification (EU 10/2011, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520) available for direct food contact applications.
Calcium carbonate, talc, barite, and silica sand transport in container liners eliminates the dust generation and product loss associated with open-top container transport. The PE coating provides moisture protection during sea freight, preventing product caking and quality degradation.

Container liners are designed for single use due to the difficulty of cleaning residual product from the liner interior and the risk of cross-contamination between shipments. However, the PE coating on the woven PP fabric is recyclable through mechanical recycling streams (LDPE recycle code 4 for the coating). We participate in a liner recycling program: used liners (after removal of bulkhead bars and drawstrings) are collected at destination, baled, and returned to China for recycling into non-food-grade plastic products. This diverts approximately 85% of liner weight from landfill.
Products unsuitable for container liner transport include: (1) Materials with particle size >50mm (rocks, large aggregates) that can puncture the liner fabric during loading impact, (2) Products with sharp, angular particles (crushed glass, silicon carbide grit) that abrade the PE coating, (3) Hot products above 80°C that can soften the PE coating and PP fabric, (4) Products requiring temperature control beyond the passive insulation provided by the container walls, and (5) Hazardous materials classified under IMDG Code that explicitly require UN-certified individual packaging — container liners are not UN-certified packaging and cannot replace UN FIBCs for dangerous goods transport.
Installation takes approximately 15-20 minutes for a 2-person crew. Steps: (1) Position the rolled liner at the container rear doors, (2) Unroll the liner along the container floor using the integrated pull straps, (3) Attach the top suspension straps to the container's interior lashing rings, (4) Insert the 4 bulkhead bars through the designated sleeves in the liner's rear panel, (5) Tension the bulkhead bars with ratchet tensioners to 150-200kg tension, and (6) Attach the loading chute to the container rear door frame. A detailed illustrated installation manual and QR-code-linked installation video are included with each liner. We also provide on-site installation training for first-time users at no additional charge.
